Internet Marketing Review September

The directory update September contains the topics Internet Marketing, Content Services and Blogging. Below follows a brief analysis of up to date internet marketing trends.

Internet Marketing and Advertising

The update on internet marketing includes several interesting innovations. Most notable is BrightTag, a service situated between market research, web metrics and marketing. BrightTag is a service to manage different kind of data gathered by web analytics on homepages or other services, which may include visits and demographic data as well as the origin of traffic and data on exit traffic. It is well known, that data has its value. This is what else is offered by BrightTag, services to monetize the data. Clients might be all kind of services in need of such data.

Innovative services and at the same time examples of companies possibly seeking data as described above are Mobiah and mSpoke. Both services are offering applications to personalize the experience on homepages and some other kind of solutions. Personalization happens by dynamic generation of content, which needs data to be accurate. Further relevant services are in the case of Mobiah personalized landing pages and social media content and in the case of mSpoke the automated generation of meta tags to index content. Personalization and generating landing pages already has been an issue in the August update by mentioning PageDo and SiteTuners.com.

Beside such innovations around market reseach, data and personalization social media marketing remains the dominant topic covered by the largest amount of new services. But this seems to change by the significant influence and popularity of the largest networks, which by their api interfaces enable the development of network specific services as well as in the case of Twitter lately the launch of proprietary marketing services. This or just seasonal reasons have calmed the market. Interesting in this context are the latest development in the field of newsfeed services as described below, which do integrate social media services aka social media feeds in the case of newsfeed readers.

Content Services and Web Content

Content services include web content of different formats from news and texts to video and online platforms to trade and distribute content. Most remarkable without doubt is Metaweb, which has been acquired by Google (see also the official Google blog post Deeper understanding with Metaweb). Metaweb is a kind of content exchange using semantic web technologies to index content and to enable relevant matching of sources and services seeking content.

By the viewing point of a business model and of course at all Friendly Music by RumbleFish, a provider of right management and licensing solutions, is most interesting. Friendly Music is offering music to be used within YouTube videos, which serves the need of consumers or better prosumers to have a reliable source of music to create sophisticated video content.

Blogging and Newsfeed Services

This update includes blog, microblogging, newsfeed and podcast search engines, directories and applications with the most interesting innovations brought up in the range of newsfeed readers.

Despite of the similar functions of blogs and feeds on one side and social networks on the other side the symbiosis of the different technologies in use in the range of newsfeed readers is most remarkable. Blogs and feeds with its possiblities to distribute and receive information have been at the beginning of the development of the social web. Then these features have been part of the functions of social networks from the beginning by enabling to receive information provided by newsfeeds beside exchanging information by proprietary feed or messaging systems.

Now happens the opposite in the case of newsfeed readers. These may enable to receive information provided by social feeds (Collected) and become enriched by social networking functions (Feedingo), which in the case of Feedlooks embraces comments and may happen in realtime (Lazyfeed).

This reminds of social media aggregators, but might be seen as a different approach keeping in mind the intention of managing information. This problem, the information overload, is solved by different approaches. For instance Fever aims to solve the problem by a ranking system displaying the most popular issues on top and my6sense delivers a self learning and personalizable solution.

Search Engine Optimization in Correlation to the Intention

Some interesting facts about the correlation of the intention of search queries and the navigation on the serps (search engine results pages) are the result of a study accomplished at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. By eye tracking the behavior depending on the intention of search queries has been surveyed. Whereas the results are interesting, it might be necessary to point to the scientific character of the study. There have been just 58 participants and some of the elements of serps (snippets) are still innovative parts (s.a. Semantic Web is in the Early Adopter Phase).

The different intentions have been information, navigation, transaction and searching for multimedia content in the forms of images and videos. The researched issues have been the attention and the time spent with the different elements of search results, which include title, snippet, url and images. The result in part shows clear differences especially regarding the snippets, which have been most important to searching for information and transactional search queries. Regarding the latter additionally titles have been very important. Most different are the results of searches dedicated to multimedia. Because of the character of the elements this might not astonish, but it is symptomatic and contrary to the elements title and internet address usually used to optimize multimedia content for search engines. Title and url had less attention than snippets with the image being the most important part. Too, his might wonder, because of the large amount of videos provided for informational purposes.
