It already has been more than rumors as the name so.cl has been mentioned, that Microsoft will launch a social network and now it happened.

Regarding the big players this step came late. But on one hand Microsoft as a software company is different and on the other hand the company tries to compete with Google in the search engine market. The latter enforces a comparison and by this and compared to the early and former activities of Google now becoming integrated in Google+ the start is just late.

After the announcement of course the question arose what kind of intent or subject the network will have. And by the first look it wonders, if it could be an approach such similar to the start of Facebook by focussing on scholars and students and maybe with ambitions to expand? But again this does have to be seen by different angles as Microsoft also is active in the elearning segment. Nevertheless watching the video on the homepage makes clear that the appearance and approach is most similar to the big standards. Remarkable again is that the Facebook single sign in solution is used to join so.cl.
